Katie McEwen is a current IUSD Board Member completing her first term and brings a rare combination of perspectives to the role: credentialed teacher, substitute teacher, PTA leader, and parent of three IUSD graduates. Her record reflects priorities that matter directly to our members: attracting and retaining outstanding teachers, fully funding Irvine schools, and supporting student mental health services.
Jane Wood is the PTSA President at Portola High School, and her background speaks for itself. She's a former teacher, IA, and current substitute who has lived the realities our staff and students face every day. She is clearly pro-teacher and pro-public education, and she came to the table already raising concerns that resonate deeply with our members: grading practices, student discipline, shared contracts, and the constant churn of new initiatives.
84% of ITA members signed petitions to get the Prop 55 extension (now Prop 3) on the November ballot, and that kind of turnout says everything about how much this funding means to our schools. Prop 3 would make permanent the income tax on California's top earners that has funded classroom and instructional needs, including educator salaries, since 2012. Without it, those rates expire after 2030, and IUSD stands to lose $7.3 million every year.
We'll be canvassing for both our school board candidates and Prop 3 in the weeks ahead; sign up below to join us (training provided).
